The province is expected to lower the minimum age for free breast cancer screening from 50 to 40.
ONTARIO - Women, non-binary people and two-spirit individuals who are over the age of 40 will soon be able to access publicly funded breast cancer screening in Ontario.
There are numerous reports that the province will lower the minimum age requirement. Starting in the fall of 2024, those between the ages of 40 and 74 will be able to self-refer for a mammogram every two years. The minimum wage is currently set at 50 years old.
The province says this means an additional 130,000 mammograms will be completed each year. The Ministry of Health will also have a public reporting system so patients can keep an eye on wait times across the province.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones is expected to make the official announcement later today.
