Ontario government changing computer science and technological education to include hands-on learning
The province is making some changes in computer science and technological education.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the updated curriculum will help prepare kids for the job market and expose them to real-life problem solving.
"Job creators and innovators have been very clear" Lecce notes. "What we teach our children must be cutting edge. It must reflect the changing marketplace. It must emphasize real-life application and life and job skills."
The new computer studies curriculum will start next year with a new Grade 10 course.
It'll give students the opportunity to build hands on projects and learn more about coding, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
Meanwhile, the revised Technological Education curriculum starts in 2024 with revised grade 9 and 10 courses.
Lecce says the program will help prepare students for careers in communications, manufacturing and trades.
The province last changed the technological education curriculum in 2009 and the computer science program in 2008.
