WOODSTOCK - It is Public Works Week and Woodstock helped celebrate.
Together with Oxford County, multiple stations were set up for students to interact with to learn the inner workings of what Public Works staff do. The event took place in Museum Square, City Hall, and the County Administration Building. Director of Public Works in Woodstock, Dan Locke on why he wanted to have the event happen.
"I found that there's good value there in bringing the kids in and doing that public engagement with them. Sometimes they'll take it home and train upwards and train their parents on, you know you can't recycle that or, you know, those kinds of things."
Locke says he has been apart of events like this in other municipalities, and wanted to make sure this event happened in Woodstock before he retires. He goes on to say what the students got to see.
"So, our sanitary sewers, our waste collection, our water distribution system, our road system, you know they'll see all that."
Locke mentions they also got to see equipment, and see demonstrations as to how each of the pieces works. He adds he hopes to potentially see some of the students move towards a job in Public Works after being able to take part in an interactive event like this.
