It wasn't the result the family of Baby Alex was hoping for. Convicted drunk driver Bonita Purtill shuffled into the Oxford County courthouse this morning, only to shuffle right back out. The gallery was full of people anticipating the sentencing of Purtill. But after everyone filed into the courtroom, Defence Attorney Peter Kratzman voiced a family matter that was directly affecting him. He told Justice Kelly Gorman that he had a recent death in the family and couldn't focus on the matter at hand. She suggested to push the sentencing hearing to a later date with which Kratzman agreed. It has been moved to Wednesday and will proceed at 10am. The Fleming-Rodrigues family were pretty upset with news. Mary Rodrigues has prepared a statement that will focus on how the death of her four month old baby boy has affected her two sons. But she'll have to wait another two days before she gets to express that. There were also witnesses ready for the side of the Crown. Two representatives from MADD London among other friends and family will all have to come back to the courthouse. And Purtill will go back to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre for the time being. She'll wait until Wednesday to hear her sentencing on the 6 counts she faces including the impaired driving and criminal negligence causing the death of Baby Alex Flemming.
