Oxford Public Health and Local vets are teaming up to offer up some low cost rabies clinics.
Oxford County Public Health is reminding residents to make sure their pets vaccinations are up to date for things like rabies.
To help prevent the spread of rabies, the County is teaming up with local veterinarians to host some low cost rabies vaccination clinics on Saturday September 26th. Public Health Nurse Elaine Reddick tells Heart FM thy just wanted to make it easier for people to get their shots.
"What we find is there are some people who for either facial or sometimes philosophical reasons don't take their cat or dog to the vet basically. So these clinics are an opportunity to meet the legal obligation and protect your pet against rabies by getting your pet vaccinated against rabies and it's only $20."
Having a pet who is not up to date on their vaccinations can carry a $90 fine and they do ask that the pet be accompanied by an adult. Reddick says they think a number of pets in Oxford County are not up to date on their vaccinations.
"I often get people who don't have their cats immunized against rabies because their cat is an indoor cat. Usually when people come into contact with bats it is indoors, so that is also where a cat will come in contact with a bat, and the bat could potentially be rabid. So that is one good reason to get your indoor cat vaccinated as well as it's the law."
Clinics are happening in Drumbo, Ingersoll, Hickson, Norwich, Tillsonburg, Ostrander and at several locations in Woodstock. For a complete list of times and locations visit http://www.oxfordcounty.ca/health.
