Remembrance Day ceremonies will be taking place across Oxford County today to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives fighting for our freedom.
WOODSTOCK - It's Remembrance Day, which means there will be a ceremony at the Woodstock cenotaph.
According to the President of the Woodstock Legion Branch 55 John Glaysher, the event starts at 10:15 a.m.
"They'll see an awful lot of wreaths being laid prior to the actual ceremony. We start laying wreaths at quarter past 10 because we have so many folks who want to recognize their organizations and pay their respects."
The formal service starts at 10:45 a.m., where they mount sentries on the cenotaph, lower the flag to half-mast for a brief remembrance service before a two-minute moment of silence for the fallen at the top of the hour. Following that, the Harvard aircrafts fly over the cenotaph in the "missing man" formation.
A closing prayer will end the ceremony, however members and guests are invited to the legion for chili and refreshments. Glaysher encourages everyone to come and pay their respects. He explains why it's so important.
"The primary reason [for Remembrance Day] is a way for us as a country and as a population to say thank you to the generations that proceeded us for what they did to maintain our freedoms, our values and our life that we've become accustomed to in a country as great as Canada."
Glaysher also added the poppy campaign to raise money in support of veterans has been very successful this year, and he thanks all of the volunteers for their efforts.
The Woodstock cenotaph is located in Victoria Park at the corner of Buller Street and Graham Street.
