Canadians will soon be able to place bets on single games of baseball, football hockey and other sports.
In a bid to win back customers from offshore sites, illegal bookmakers, and American casinos, the Senate has passed Bill C-218.
The bill is a private member's bill that amends Criminal Code provisions for betting on single sports games, which is currently illegal with the exception of horse racing.
It now awaits royal assent in order to become law.
After that, provincial governments will be able to choose how they regulate and license betting website, casinos, and other businesses allowing bets on single games.
The bill was introduced by Saskatoon-Grasswood Conservative MP Kevin Waugh, who says its passage is a victory for Canadian sports, sports fans and businesses.
"For too long, black market bookmakers and offshore websites have had a monopoly on single-event betting. It’s time that Canadians take back this massive market."
