Shawn Shapton believes his strong business sense will be a strong asset if he becomes the next mayor of Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock city councillor is looking to take his political career to the next level.
Shawn Shapton has announced his candidacy for mayor.
He would like to lead the Friendly City in a professional and accountable manner.
"I think that I bring a strong business sense to the community and that's something that we've been missing. We need to focus on the core needs of our community and take a look at all of our expenses."
He is very concerned with the large amounts of money being spent at the county level with little benefit to Woodstock taxpayers.
Shapton stresses the need for communication and transparency. This is a promise he intends to keep if he is voted in this fall.
"I plan on holding regular town hall style meetings to ensure transparency and accountability so they (Woodstock residents) feel informed and heard. Four years is a long time you have to make sure that you're aligning what we feel as councillors and the mayor that it is in line with our constituents."
Shapton would also like to enhance partnerships with the Woodstock BIA, the Woodstock and District Chamber of Commerce and United Way Oxford and other community stakeholders to ensure a successful community. He believes collaboration is the way to bring balance and strength.
Shapton grew up in Sweaburg, but moved to Woodstock with his wife in the late 1990's. He was the proud owner of Integra Document Destruction, before he decided to sell his business last year and retire.
As a Woodstock city councillor he has been a member of the Woodstock Police Services Board, the Youth Advisory Committee and the Recreation Committee. He was also involved in the successful boundary adjustment with Norwich Township.
