Statistics Canada says the Canadian economy lost 200,000 jobs last month and it's reporting a national unemployment rate of 6.5 percent.
CANADA - The Canadian economy lost 200,000 jobs in the month of January.
Statistics Canada says this is the largest drop since January 2021 and most of the job losses were in Ontario and Quebec. Both provinces had strict public health measures in place last month to help stop the spread of the Omicron variant.
The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in January, which is a slight increase compared to December's rate of 6.0 percent.
Stats Can says the food service and accommodations sectors were the hardest hit last month. It also says women and young people were most affected by the job losses.
