A woman from Stratford is out $5,000 after falling victim to a scam from someone pretending to work for Service Canada.
STRATFORD - A 38 year old woman from Stratford is out $5,000 after falling victim to a scam.
Police say the woman was contacted by someone pretending to work for Service Canada. The number even showed up as Service Canada when she called. She was told that her Social Insurance Number had been compromised and that she need to pay them $5,000 in bitcoins.
The woman sent the money as requested, but upon receiving a second call, demanding another $25,000, she realized that she had been the victim of a scam and called police.
The Stratford Police would like to advise the public of this incident to remind everyone that no government agency, or legitimate business, will ever contact you to demand money over the phone; and would also never demand payment to be made by way of bitcoin, gift cards, or any similar method of payment. Please be aware that scammers are able to contact you from “Spoof” phone numbers, making them appear more legitimate and attempt to confuse the victim.
