Why Not Us will be hosting the Street Mayor Classic at College Ave Secondary School on Saturday December 10th this year.
WOODSTOCK - The Street Mayor Classic will be happening this year for the first time since COVID began.
Duane Kumala-Thomas from Why Not Us says they're excited to return to College Ave Secondary School for the three-on-three basketball tournament.
"It is (Saturday) December 10th and it is for students ranging from Grade 7 all the way to Grade 12, so we divide it up into divisions. We encourage everyone to come out, parents and families alike!"
The tournament is open to boys and girls and it costs $30 to register online here before the Thursday December 8th deadline.
Kurke White, the President of Why Not Us and the Street Mayor himself, says they decided to host the first Street Mayor Classic about 10 years ago while a teachers' strike was taking place.
"A young friend of ours was like 'man this is my last year in school and basketball is done.' So we hosted the first Street Mayor Classic with 18 people, it was like the chill City of Woodstock team, and from there it grew from 18 to over 100."
Why Not Us is a non-profit organization, that started out as a local group of long-standing Woodstock residents who wanted to build new basketball courts in the Friendly City. That project has been dubbed the Kendall Courts Project and it recently received a $10,000 donation from FirstOntario Credit Union for the basketball nets.
Kurke White and Duane Kumala-Thomas both stopped by the Heart FM studio on Tuesday November 15th to chat with Dan and Marcie about the Street Mayor Classic and other Why Not Us programs. You can listen to the full interview below.
