It's the first lab confirmed case of influenza A for the 2025 respiratory virus season.
SWPH - It looks like flu season has officially begun in Oxford, Elgin and St. Thomas.
Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) reported its first lab verified case of influenza A for the 2025 respiratory virus season yesterday.
The symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, chills, muscle aches and fatigue. Officials say it could become more severe and possibly even life threatening in some cases.
This means it's good idea to wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes and stay home if you're not feeling well. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran is also encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 to protect themselves.
"Flu season is not just a seasonal inconvenience; it's a serious public health concern. Getting the flu shot it the most effective way to protect yourself and those around you, especially individuals who are vulnerable to complications. It's a simple step that can help protect the ones you love."
The health unit says influenza is responsible for about 12,200 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths each year, making it one of the top death leading causes of death in Canada.
