Over the next two days temperatures will be in the low 30's, causing a heat warning to be issued.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health is gearing up for the heat wave.
The Health Unit has issued a heat warning as Environment Canada is forecasting daytime highs in the low 30's tomorrow and Sunday. The heat warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to be at least 31 degrees and/or a humidex value above 40 degrees for at least two days, and the overnight lows at or above 20.
SWPH says there are many things people should do in order to protect themselves from extreme heat. The list of suggestions is below.
- During extreme temperature conditions, stay indoors in an air-conditioned building if possible.
- Limit time in the sun when the UV Index is most intense, between 11 AM – 4 PM.
- Seek shade when outdoors, especially during mid-day.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and decrease intake of caffeinated/alcoholic beverages.
- Take cool showers or baths.
- Apply Sunscreen with SPF 30 (or higher), 20-30 minutes before going outside to ensure absorption and re-apply every 2-3 hours.
- Check regularly on children, the elderly, persons with disabilities and individuals with chronic illnesses.
- Never leave young children, the elderly or pets in a closed parked vehicle for any period.
- Find a public Cooling Centre at www.swpublichealth.ca/extreme-heat
The Health Unit says during a heat warning, if you or someone you know experiences physical distress it should be taken seriously and medical attention should be sought, either by calling 9-1-1 or getting to the closest emergency department.
