Southwestern Public Health would like the federal government to set aside funding in the 2023 budget in order to support school-based healthy food programs across the country.
SWPH - A total of 67 schools within the Southwestern Public Health Region offered healthy food programs for students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12 this year.
Research shows that students who eat a healthy breakfast and nutritious foods learn and behave better in school. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran says that's why the health unit has decided to back The Coalition for Healthy School Food's Nourish Kids Now Campaign.
“Having a Canada-wide school nutrition program will help to ensure equitable access to nutritious options for growing minds, which benefits us all as a society.”
The campaign calls on the Trudeau Government to provide funding for school-based healthy food programs in the 2023 budget. The programs are currently funded through provincial and municipal governments.
