Tavistock Pig Farmer Expected to Enter a Plea in the New Year

A Tavistock man charged in one of the biggest cases of animal cruelty in Canadian history made a brief court appearance on Thursday.

TAVISTOCK - A 27 year old man from Tavistock made a brief court appearance in Simcoe on Thursday.

Benjamin Stein is charged in one of the biggest cases of animal cruelty in Canadian history.

The charges stem from when Benjamin Stein lived in Langton and follow the investigation into the death of over 1,000 pigs in his care.

According to a report from Monte Sonneberg in the Simcoe Reformer, Stein is expected to enter a plea on January 18th.

A plea would avoid a lengthy trial in this case.

SPCA officers visited his farm in Langton after getting a tip about the welfare of the pigs on February 17th of this year. They say they found the pigs buried in a manure filled barn in total darkness and found dead pigs and dying pigs with no access to food.

An estimated 1,265 pigs were dead when officers arrived and an additional 250 pigs had to be euthanized on-site due to the severe condition in which they were found.
