BRANT COUNTY - The County of Brant welcomed back Temporary Foreign Workers last week.
Mayor David Bailey says in a typical year, the County will house over 800 migrant workers.
"We are pleased to welcome Temporary Foreign Workers back to the County of Brant. Many workers return to the County year after year, supporting our local food supply. We are thankful they offer their specialized farming skills and we certainly value their contribution to our community.”
The Brant County Health Unit has issued a number of requirements for the workers to return. Some migrant workers in the region are currently in the midst of a 14 day isolation at local motels. The Brant County Health Unit is allowing migrant workers to complete their quarantine period on the farm.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke says they understand how important these workers are to local farmers.
“Temporary Foreign Workers are integral to local farming operations and the food supply chain. As our community continues to operate within the lens of COVID-19, both farm operators and workers play an important role in preventing the spread of this illness.”
The County of Brant Economic Development team has been working hand-in-hand with the agricultural community and all pertinent levels of government from the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the agricultural sector within Brant is supported.
Last week, farmers in Norfolk County staged a massive protest over the current regulations when it comes to foreign workers. One of their biggest issues was a stipulation that only allows three people to live in one bunkhouse.
We are still waiting to get a response from the Provincial Government.
