A volunteer-run Santa Claus parade is in the works in Tillsonburg. It's currently scheduled for Saturday December 11th starting at 2pm at Memorial Park.
TILLSONBURG - The three main Santa Claus parades in Oxford County are not happening this year.
Tillsonburg, Ingersoll and Woodstock will not be hosting the parades. This decision was made months ago because of the uncertainty of the pandemic. It takes months to plan a parade in a major centre. You have to get all of the proper permits and secure floats.
A group of citizens in Tillsonburg has decided they're going to host their own parade. Cathy Lynn Doyle-Ryan says they won't have the permits to have a traditional parade with all the bands and it won't be as big as you're used to, but they are working to make something happen for the children.
"We just want to do something the community can be part of, they can get out and see, it will bring a lot of Christmas cheer to the town. The children need it, they need something right now."
The group of volunteers includes 6 people who have already started planning. They have a Santa lined up and they're asking people to decorate their vehicles and blast Christmas music when they arrive.
"Decorate your cars, decorate your trucks, follow the road safety, anyone in the vehicle has to be in a seat belt, play your Christmas music. We are just asking for the public to come out, enjoy it, line the streets, use common sense with distance and things like that."
They still have a lot of work to do to iron out the details and we will be posting more information as it becomes available. The group has reached out to the OPP and the local fire department.
The plan is to have the parade on Saturday December 11th, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the complex at Memorial Park.
