Randi Crawford with the Oxford OPP was back in the Heart FM studio for the August edition of Tip Tuesday.
OXFORD COUNTY - Speeding before the limit changes, ticket quotas, and signalling other people through intersections.
These were the three topics discussed during the August edition of Tip Tuesday with the Oxford OPP.
Community Safety and Media Relations Constable Randi Crawford answered a variety of questions from Heart FM listeners on the morning show today, and you can find all of the details below:
1) Can you be charged for speeding if you're caught accelerating before an 80 zone begins?
Crawford says the answer is simple... yes!
"We have to remember that it's a speed maximum, not a speed minimum. So you're technically not supposed to be going 80 km/hr until that sign says 80 km/hr begins."
2) Do police services have quotas for the number of tickets they have to issue?
Crawford can't speak for other police services, but she says the Oxford OPP does not have quotas for its officers.
"We have what's called an expectation, so we're expected to get out there and enforce the rules of the road, but we don't have any numbers of tickets that we have to give out every month."
Oxford OPP officers will also have a blitz every once in a while, where they are on the lookout for specific behaviours such as impaired driving or improper seatbelt use.
3) If you are at an intersection and another driver waves you through, even if they have the right of way, could you get in trouble if a crash happens?
Crawford says yes you can, adding good intentions don't always have good outcomes.
"If that other person waves you through even though they have the right of way, if a collision occurs because of a misunderstanding you could be partially at fault at least because of your behaviours."
If someone with the right of way tries to signal you through an intersection, Crawford says you should make eye contact with the other driver, shake your head no, and let them go first. Trying to communicate through hand signals can be confusing for both people involved.
The next Tip Tuesday is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th and you can submit a question online here.
