Randi Crawford with the Oxford OPP was back in the Heart FM studio for the May edition of Tip Tuesday.
OXFORD COUNTY - Roundabouts, daytime running lights, and Crime Stoppers.
Randi Crawford, the Media Relations and Community Safety Officer with the Oxford OPP, addressed all of these matters during the May edition of Tip Tuesday on the Heart FM morning show today.
Crawford answered the following four questions during this morning's segment:
1) How do you properly enter and exit a roundabout?
Crawford has come up with a handy acronym so drivers know what to do; LASS.
L - Look left and remember that the drivers in the roundabout have the right-of-way
A - Allow adequate gaps between your vehicle and others
S - Signal your intention
S - Stay in the roundabout and go around again if you're stressed and unsure where to exit
She says you should treat a roundabout like an intersection when it comes to signaling, but make sure you don't signal too early and confuse the drivers behind you.
Crawford adds lots of people fail to signal at all in a roundabout, so you need to be extra cautious.
"When you're in a roundabout, you should always anticipate that the person in front of you is going to be leaving at the next opportunity. If you look at it that way, then you should always be vigilant and be able to respond if they exit all of a sudden or if they stay and go a couple of more exits."
2) Is your identity really kept anonymous if you submit a tip through Crime Stoppers?
Crawford stresses that Crime Stoppers is 100 percent anonymous, adding she is a coordinator for Crime Stoppers of Oxford.
"When I receive a tip there are absolutely no identifying features at all with that person. It's all just the tips and the information."
She adds the person submitting the tip will have to follow specific instructions through an e-mail to make sure everything is done properly.
Both the Oxford OPP and Woodstock Police have used tips from Crime Stoppers to solve several crimes in the Oxford County community, including drug busts and weapons incidents.
You can submit a tip to Crime Stoppers of Oxford County online here or by calling 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
3) Is there a law for using daytime running lights?
Crawford says there is, adding it's all about safety. You want to make sure your vehicle can be seen by pedestrians and other drivers from dusk to dawn, and during dark and gloomy weather.
She adds you should check to make sure you have them on before hitting the road.
"Most vehicles nowadays do have them on but you can also turn them off in most cars, so sometimes if someone is getting in and out of their vehicle their knee could bump the switch. So you just want to be mindful of that."
The next Tip Tuesday is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25th and you can submit a question online here.
