Environment Canada has confirmed an EF0 tornado touched down in Norwich Township last Wednesday.
OXFORD COUNTY - Environment Canada is confirming two tornadoes touched town in Southwestern Ontario last week; one which was right in our own backyard.
An EF0 tornado hit Norwich Township last Wednesday, bringing peak winds of 130 kilometres an hour with it. It was confirmed via video evidence.
Tornadoes are formed whenever there is instability in the atmosphere, moisture in the low levels and some sort of lifting mechanism coming through. Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says we have all of those ingredients today.
"As this cold front approaches all of the heat and humidity we've been experiencing since Sunday is fuel that these storms need. We've already seen a series of thunderstorms forming in different parts of Southern Ontario today. With the severe thunderstorm warning in effect for Oxford County, that activity could continue on and off throughout the afternoon hours. There's a concern some of these thunderstorms could produce damaging winds, large hail and even flash flood potential."
Coulson says you should keep a close eye on the weather statements issued by Environment Canada.
"Right now it doesn't look like tornadoes are a possibility but that's something the forecasters will be watching closely as we go through the day."
