"I want to very clear, we are not intimidated by those who hurl insults and abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has addressed the nation for the first time since the weekend protests in Ottawa.
Trudeau has tested positive for COVID-19, as has two of his children. He will be self-isolating and following public health guidelines. Trudeau says he has three doses of the vaccine and is not showing any COVID-19 symptoms.
Speaking on the protest in Ottawa, Trudeau says he is disturbed by the images he saw on Saturday.
"Freedom of expression, assembly and association are cornerstones of democracy but Nazi symbolism, racist imagery and desecration of war memorials are not. It is an insult to memory and truth, hate can never be the answer."
He says Canadians are shocked and disgusted by the behaviour of some people protesting in our nations capital.
"I want to very clear, we are not intimidated by those who hurl insults and abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless. We will not give in, to those who fly racist flags, we won't cave to those who engage in vandalism and dishonour the memory of our veterans."
The protest in Ottawa has now entered day 3, with no signs of slowing down.
