Employees with the TVDSB will be removing asbestos from IDCI before it can cause problems.
INGERSOLL - The TVDSB will be taking steps in the coming months to rid IDCI of asbestos.
The beams that hold up the second floor are covered in a fire proof material that contains asbestos. Employees with Thames Valley District School Board will be closing off portions of the school and removing hazardous material in the coming months.
Kevin Bushell, Executive Officer of Facility Service and Capital Planning says the work will be done outside of school hours so the impact will be minimal.
"There might be a class moved out of a room if we move furniture in and out and that type of thing. We don't take over a whole wing of a school or anything we just move from room to room removing ceilings and doing that spot, move on to the next one and everything is cleared before the next day so that the staff and students can go back in."
About 40 percent of Thames Valley Schools contain some sort of asbestos material. Bushell tells Heart FM students and staff are not at risk.
"We have to routinely inspect the asbestos to make sure it is maintaining its integrity. The only time asbestos becomes an issue is when it starts to break apart and fall apart so we are moving on the removal before that happens."
The IDCI removal has not been tendered yet but Bushell expects the work to begin this spring.
