It's about a group of local farmers who became tug-of-war champions at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.
EMBRO - Another local legend will be brought to life on the Thistle Theatre stage in Embro.
Mighty Men of Zorra will make it's debut tomorrow evening with seven shows scheduled over the next two weeks.
Wardrobe and Social Media Coordinator Sue Hilborn says it's about a local tug-of-war team that became world champions at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.
"They were 40 to 50 years old with farms and families so they were very reluctant to go, but they were convinced to be part of this world championship tug of war in Chicago."
The show also highlights some of the events leading up to the their win as well.
Producer Don Hilborn says they have stripped back the stage for this production.
"The theatre was built in 1892, so one year before they won the championship, so we have exposed the whole front of the stage. I think we have about 150 pictures that come up as we go through that we're projecting off the back black wall, so it's quite interesting."
Tickets for the show cost $25 each and they can be purchased online here or by calling 226-785-3353. Those who are attending the Saturday evening performances have the option to add on a pulled pork dinner from Knox United Church for an extra $25.
Mighty Men of Zorra was written by local playwright William Butt, who also wrote Miss Supertest - The Bob Hayward Story. That production was a huge hit at Thistle Theatre in 2024.
Sue and Don Hilborn stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Thursday, March 19th. You can listen to the full interview below:
