LONDON - A verdict will be delivered today in the sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team.
Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote were all part of Canada's 2018 World Junior Hockey Team. They have all pleaded not guilty to an alleged sexual assault that took place in a London hotel room back in June 2018. McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.
The players were attending a gala and golf tournament in London, celebrating their championship victory when the alleged events took place.
The prosecutors alleged that McLeod was the "ringleader" that evening. The court heard that the complainant met McLeod in a downtown bar and later had sex with him in his hotel room, but that encounter was not part of the trail. The charges are for alleged events that took place when several other players came into the room.
This trial has sparked several conversations about consent and sports culture.
