Thames Valley District School Board will take part in Waste Reduction Week by reducing student lunch garbage.
OXFORD COUNTY - Waste Reduction Week kicks off tomorrow across the Thames Valley District School Board. TVDSB is aiming to reduce lunch waste and direct parents and teachers to more sustainable options."We are encouraging to parents and teachers to try litterless lunches where you use as many reusuable containers as possible.and for teachers then promote the idea of a boomerang lunch where the waste that is produced from a students lunch is returned home at the end of the day," said Learning Coordinator at TVDSB Erin Mutch.
The decision to take a more eco-friendly approach followed in the wake of a waste audit that was conducted last year by the school board. "With the data from the waste audit we learned that really about 20 percent of what is produced in the school is true garbage."
As part of the intiative the Environmental department at the school board released new guidelines to help students and teachers."We improved our waste management guidelines, which we released this week along with a poster to all schools outlining what can be recycled at schools."
Parents are being asked to send their children to school with reuseable containers this week.
