The Woodstock Fire Department has been doing some ice water rescue training over the past couple of days. The local waterways are very unstable right now due to the ice melting.
WOODSTOCK - We have had beautiful weather over the past couple of days and the Woodstock Fire Department would like to remind everyone to stay away from waterways.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says the department has been doing some ice water rescue training this week.
"It's something that we hope we never need to use, but we need to practice the techniques to get the individuals out of the water in the safest manner both for them and for us."
Woods says the ice is not stable right now.
"Please stay off those waterways. I know that it's going to be a very warm day today and the rest of the week. You're going to be out walking and perhaps you'll have a pet, so make sure they stay off the ice as well."
She says they were conducting some ice water rescue training at the Pittock Conservation Area yesterday and the water was very unstable because the ice is starting to melt. It can also be hard to tell where the shore ends and where the water begins in some areas due to the snow.
With it being St. Patrick's Day today, Woods would also like to remind everyone to drink responsibly. She says you should stay out of the kitchen if you plan on consuming alcohol tonight.
"Most home fires are caused by kitchen fires and a lot of the time it involves alcohol; people falling asleep while making french fries or something or just not using proper fire safe practices. My advice would be to order some takeout, pre-cook something or maybe make a sandwich tonight. Just be fire safe out there."
