Be careful with flame candles and don't light any fireworks.
WOODSTOCK - Lots of people in the Friendly City are excited to celebrate Diwali, also known as the festival of lights.
The Woodstock Fire Department has a few reminders to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says you should be careful if you're planning on lighting a few candles tonight.
"We would prefer they use battery operated candles for safety. If they are using flame candles, they should stay close by and it should be in a sturdy glass container on a non-combustible surface."
You also shouldn't expect any fireworks in the night sky this evening. Woods says consumer fireworks have been banned in Woodstock since January 1st, 2024.
"This includes roman candles, sparklers, flying lanterns, barrages, cakes, comets, mines, missiles, sky rockets, fountains, wheels, ground spinners, burning school houses and flying ghosts. Basically all types of fireworks are not permitted."
Those who decide to light their own fireworks anyway could face a $400 fine plus a $90 victim surcharge.
Woodstock firefighters will be patrolling the city tonight to make sure everyone is having a safe and fun time. If you spot someone lighting their own fireworks, you can report it by calling the Woodstock Police non-emergency line at 519-537-2323 with extension 9.
