Local residents celebrating Diwali this year on November 4th, will be able to set off the traditional fireworks.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has approved a by-law exemption to allow fireworks on Diwali.
Diwali falls on November 4. It is a festival of light and one of the major festivals celebrated by Sikh, Hindus, Jains and some Buddhists. Those who celebrate decorate their homes with lights, diya and flowers, gifts and sweets are changed. After the evening prayer, it is a tradition to set off fireworks.
The request to council was made by the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Working Committee. Councillor Mark Schadenberg did ask for a provision in the exemption to put a time limit on this. He noted November 4th is a school night and some residents don't like the noise, so he asked for a provision to stop the fireworks after 9:30 or 10:00 pm.
Council approved the motion and fireworks can be set on November 4 in Woodstock celebrate Diwali.
