The sterilization of medical instruments was reportedly not meeting provincial standards.
WOODSTOCK - There's been a report of an infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapse at a specialist's office in Woodstock.
In September, following a complaint from the public, Southwestern Public Health conducted an inspection of the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic of Dr. D. Snider. His office is located at 716 Dundas Street.
The lapse is reportedly related to the sterilization of medical instruments, and that the clinic's practices did not meet provincial standards.
Improperly sterilized medical instruments leads to a higher chance of transmitting of blood borne infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV, though Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran says they have not received any evidence of that occurring yet.
“Following the investigation, my initial assessment is that the risk of acquiring such an infection from improperly sterilized medical equipment in this setting is anticipated to be very low. As a precaution, however, I recommend that patients who had certain medical procedures at this clinic between January 1, 2020 to September 12, 2022 get tested.”
Patients who are considered most at risk of an infection will receive a letter recommending testing shortly. Anyone else who believes they may have been affected can learn more from the health unit’s website.
Tran also said that Dr. Snider has made the required changes to his IPAC practices.
“Since our visit in September, for example, he has switched to disposable medical instruments. Dr. Snider is working closely with our public health unit, actively participating in the investigation process, supporting the notification of patients.”
