You could call him Woodstock's Ironman. Local firefighter Rob Bertrand took 1st place at the Canadian Iron 226 Triathlon in Ottawa. The event was held September 1st, featuring a 3.8-km swim, a 180-km bike ride, followed by a 42.2-km run. Bertrand finished in 10-hours, 46-minutes and 14-seconds. He says it was by far his best finish. "I'm pretty happy with my time, I don't think I could have done any better. It was about an hour-and-a-half better than my previous time." Bertrand told Heart FM he's really not sure what compels him to compete, other than to be in shape and be outdoors. "It's quite a challenge, and I enjoy all three sports. Running is my strong suit but by the time you get to the running...the ability to run tired I guess you could say is an acquired skill." Bertrand won a wet suit, a gift certificate to a bike shop in Ottawa and a 1st place medal. He credits the win to the support of his wife and kids, and the local athletes he trains with including an impromptu Woodstock Triathlon group.
