A new mobile app will be encouraging residents to get out an explore Oxford County later this summer. It's the latest development in promoting local tourism that will be available for free, right at the touch of your smart phone. The Geo-Adventure app is under development by TecVana Corporation. CEO Doug Matatall explains the concept of the app. "The app will come up with a menu of what do you want. Do you want a new adventure? Do you want an existing adventure? Do you want to find out what activities are occurring? Do you want to explore? All these things come up on a map. The map will be GPS driven. It will have flags to indicate all the spots along the way. When you go out there and stop at those sites, you actually earn points, and those points are redeemable within the virtual store within the app. Within that virtual store is where our sponsors like Tim Horton's and like Coleman would have their products, where you redeem the points for merchandise within the virtual store." The County is going to be a pilot site for the app, at a cost of $24,000 in the first year, and $48,000 a year over the next four. Because it's a trial program, they can opt out at any time. Tourism Specialist Cathy Bingham is hoping the app will go viral. "For us to develop our own app, we couldn't spread the cost of development over 5-years like we can with TecVana. They have a really ambitious marketing campaign once the app is available. We're excited." A public launch of the app will be held on August 6th at the County Administration Building. It will feature a live demonstration of the Geo-Adventuring app with World Fishing Network hosts Mariko and Wayne Izumi. The app will encourage residents to get out and explore things to do in Oxford like: -Attractions -Live Entertainment -Events -Where to Golf -Shopping -Where to Eat -Where to Stay -Community Resources Tourism Oxford is planning on inviting the Chambers of Commerce, BIA's and other local organizations to piggyback on the County's license to promote their events and offerings.
