WPS Shares Cyber Monday Tips

It is a big day for online shopping, and the Woodstock Police want to make sure everyone stays safe.

WOODSTOCK - It's the most wonderful time of the year for online shoppers!

It's Cyber Monday, so lots of retailers will be offering special deals online only.

Pritpal Thind, the Media Relations and Community Service Officer with the Woodstock Police Service, says you should always be cautious before inputting your credit card information online.

"The website URL would begin with 'https' because that is the marker for a secure website. If the 's' is missing or if the padlock in the internet search bar is absent, that means it may not be secure, and you should be careful about inputting your credit card information there."

You should also stay away from websites that request wire transfers, e-transfers or any other unusual form of payment. Thind says legitimate stores will have straightforward methods of payment.

This is a prime time of the year for scammers and fraudsters, so you should be extra cautious and have a talk with your elderly friends and family members to make sure they don't fall victim.

Thind says you should always keep an eye on the shipping status and be wary of porch pirates as well.

"Have a good working order camera and, if possible, schedule your delivery for certain times for when you know you will have access to what you have shipped."
