Ontario residents can expect to see a few new changes to their hydro bills come 2016.
ONTARIO - Ontario residents will see changes to their hydro bills starting in 2016.
Three programs are responsible for the changes. The first of which is aimed at helping low income families. Under a new program by the Liberal government, low income families can receive a discount on their hydro bills, amounting to about 70 cents added to other households to help cover the expenses. The program is meant to help low income residents with the ever increasing cost of hydro - it's estimated that some households pay as much as 10% of their total income on hydro alone.
Two other hydro programs are coming to an end: The Ontario Clean Energy Rebate, which provided a 10% rebate on hydro bills, ends January first of next year. The Ontario Debt Retirement Charge will also be coming to a close. The charge amounted to just under $6 per month over the last 10 years and was part of an initiative meant to pay off a long standing debt from Ontario Hydro's successor companies.
Overall it's not known how much of an increase residents could see, but some sources believe it could be as much as $137.
