Norfolk OPP are urging people to be cautious of scams after a person lost over $70,000.
NORFOLK - A community member has lost over $70,000 in a crypto-currency investment scam.
The Norfolk OPP investigated the fraud Monday morning, discovering that the victim responded to an online ad about investment opportunities.
They were contacted by someone who claimed to be an investor. The perpetrator encouraged them to invest with the promise of significant returns.
From October 2024 to March 2025 the victim invested around $76,000 without seeing any returns.
Officers are urging people to be extremely cautious when considering investment opportunities. Reminding people that scams and frauds happen daily through online platforms, phone calls, texts, letters or faxes.
To avoid falling victim to similar investment scams:
- Research and verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities and the companies offering them.
- Be cautious when dealing with investments promising high returns with little risk. Overly optimistic claims may signal a potential scam.
- Avoid sharing sensitive information.
