A Tough Year in Zorra Township

It has been a hard year for Zorra Township, but Mayor Lupton says there is a lot to look forward to in 2017.

ZORRA - 2016 was not the best year for many in Zorra Township.

The biggest news from the area happened last month when Maple Leaf announced they are closing their plant in Thamesford. Mayor Margaret Lupton says they are worried about the impact this will have on the community.

"I think the upset it caused the community, you know it's going to take a long time to get over. The company has been in Zorra Township for 80 years and played a big part in the community life in Thamesford, so they are going to be missed."

Lupton did say they had some positive news in the Township as well. Most notably with the opening of the fire hall in Thamesford which will serve as the emergency centre for Zorra Township.

"The opening of the fire hall in Thamesford was very special. I think we have a state of the art facility - we tried to do the very best we could for the fire hall and it is our emergency centre now. Everyone who has visited the fire hall, particularly the other fire department, seems to be very impressed with what we do there so I am very pleased with that. Another thing is we started a program in Zorra of going out to the schools and visiting the schools. This is the first year that Zorra Highland Park participated and they came and they did wonderful presentations - all of the schools did. You would be very impressed to see the way the children prepare for a delegation and the things they ask for. I'm looking forward to next year when the staff comes back with ideas on how we can help these children get the things that they asked for."
