Oxford County's Official Plan has been amended to allow for Additional Residential Units in the townships of Zorra, East Zorra-Tavistock, South-West Oxford, Norwich, and Blandford-Blenheim.
OXFORD - County Council has made amendments to the Official Plan that will bring Additional Residential Units (ARUs) to Blandford-Blenheim, Zorra, South-West Oxford, East Zorra-Tavistock, and Norwich.
ARUs are smaller, secondary dwelling units that are inside, attached to, or on the same property as a primary single detached, semi-detached, or townhouse dwelling.
Warden Larry Martin says Oxford badly needs housing, and this plan is structured to be a win-win for both parties.
"Let's face it. If you're a couple of two living in a 3,000-square-foot home, you're not using it all. This will allow you to renovate and rent part of [your home] out to help with your expenses, but it also helps somebody else get their toe in the ground and start saving towards their own home while giving them a home."
Martin also clarified that this plan is not the same as the My Second Unit program, calling it "similar but different."
