A multi-organizational partnership has led to affordable housing units being built in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - A groundbreaking ceremony took place in Woodstock.
The event was to announce the construction of a new 45-unit housing project located at 175 Springbank Ave. The Afro-Caribbean Business Network partnered with Oxford County and Bethany Lutheran Church to bring the units to the city. Executive Director of the Afro-Caribbean Business Network Ryan Knight says this is the first time they have partnered with groups to build housing units.
"And that's where we feel Oxford County and Woodstock were really receptive to what we wanted to do. Because in other cities, sometimes you get friction from residents. So, being able to now execute it here, we can show that it can be done. We're not going to disrupt the town. We actually want to add value."
23 units will be affordable housing aimed at seniors, single women, and women with children. Knight adds that the Network has a business dealing with care for seniors, so this project fits right in.
"When the church reached out about wanting to do affordable housing for seniors, we realized that in every city is such a need, anything that we can do to support, and we had that expertise to be able to bring the funding, hey, there's really no excuse not to be able to execute this once we found out that we could help."
Oxford County is supporting the project through the provision of shovel-ready land, a $1.2-million capital contribution, and development charge exemptions. Joint funding for the project of $1.11 million is being contributed from the Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI) and the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI) funds to support 11 of the 23 affordable units. This project aligns with Oxford County’s 10-Year Shelter Plan ("Housing for all" plan) and the Master Housing Strategy.
