United Way Oxford says the workshops will help form social connections.
OXFORD COUNTY - United Way Oxford is looking to connect older adults.
In partnership with Southwestern Public Health, Oxford County Library, and the Woodstock Public Library, there will be three workshops under the name Pull Up a Chair: Building Connection Close to Home. Community Impact Manager at United Way, Lindsay Wilson, talks about why they want to host the events.
"Social connection and reducing isolation really have some incredible health benefits. So, thinking about those two kinds of things, we brought the Genwell workshops to the community."
Wilson mentions that United Way does not set an age, but does say who they usually target.
"Generally speaking, we would say that's probably about 50-plus. We've partnered with a couple of the senior centers to offer these events."
Wilson mentions if you are someone who feels like you fit into this demographic, you are more than welcome to show up. The workshops are free of charge and do not require registration.
The workshops are on September 10th at 3:00 p.m. at the Tillsonburg Branch of the Oxford County Library, September 11th at 10:30 a.m. at the Ingersoll Branch of the Oxford County Library, and September 11th at 2:30 p.m. at the Woodstock Public Library.
Wilson also talks about social gatherings that will be taking place two weeks after the workshops. Anyone who attended the workshops will be able to attend a relaxed social gathering featuring conversation, refreshments, and an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces. The gatherings are intended to help participants continue building relationships in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.
The social gatherings will take place on September 22nd from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at South Gate Centre, September 23rd from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Tillsonburg Seniors Centre, and September 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ingersoll Seniors Centre.
