The best of Oxford County were recognized at the Agricultural Awards of Excellence Wednesday night.
WOODSTOCK -- A community celebration Wednesday night brought out the best which Oxford County has to offer for the Agricultural Awards of Excellence.
The awards show is a prominent annual feature put on by the Oxford County Federation of Agriculture. OCFA has a long-standing tradition of hosting the Agriculture Awards of Excellence and the gala evening has become known across the county and beyond as an evening which celebrates rural roots, while recognizing the commitment and innovation of Oxford County's agricultural community.
As with year's past, someone was selected to become part of the Oxford County Agricultural Hall of Fame. This year's surprise entrant was Cathy Bingham, who recently retired after serving as Tourism Specialist for the County of Oxford.
"I've never been so surprised in all my life! This is a wonderful, wonderful honour and it's going to take me forever to get over the surprise of it all," said Bingham -- who spoke to Heart FM moments after receiving her award.
Bingham's award was presented by Don McKay, Warden and Mayor of East Zorra-Tavistock.
Thinking she was there to support one of the winners who had been announced last month, Bingham says she had no idea she was going to be accepting an award herself.
"I never thought it could be me, because I'm so used to being in the background and serving this community from behind, and that's where I'm most comfortable. So to be recognized publicly for this is one of the high-lights for my whole life and whole career. I'm thrilled beyond words."
Bingham says there are all sorts of people waiting in the ranks to showcase Oxford -- like up and coming culinary stars, farmers and cheese makers just to name a few. Many of those up-and-comers were also honoured.
One of those went to Oxford Junior Farmers, who picked up this year's "Spirit of Agriculture Award." A Youth In Agriculture Bursary was also presented to Drew DeBruyn.
Also winning Wednesday was Woodstock's Harcolm Farms who earned the "Family Farm Award."
"Six Thirty Nine" -- the casual fine dining restaurant located on Peel Street in Woodstock picked up the Federation's "Innovation Award." A local Technology Award was also presented to Tavistock's Practical Precision. Sustainability Award honours went to Alan Dale.
Also winning at last night's event was Canning Produce, who were presented the County's Small Agri-business award. Total Equipment Rentals was presented as best in the Large Agri-business category.
