Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock hosts another successful Tastings event bringing in over $20 000
WOODSTOCK - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock had a smashing success at the 27th annual Tastings event.
They raised over $20 000 this year. Case Worker and Fundraising and Marketing Assistant Kristen Ralph tells Heart FM they got a lot of positive feedback from the community on the event. "We changed things up a bit and had a much bigger event, so we used both of the rooms downstairs at the Quality Hotel and they had different pavilions; we had comfort food, Oxford and area cheeses, and we also had our hot and spicy room which we considered the hot night out." She adds they also had local breweries, wineries and a vodka vendor in attendance, along with a silent auction.
Ralph says all of the money raised locally stays local and will go towards various programs sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters.
She also talks about some of the benefits of becoming a mentor to a child through the Big Brothers Big Sisters. Ralph says, "People think that is a huge commitment, when really you are just being another friend for a child and you're going out and having fun. Just that consistent and reliable mentor in a child's life can make a huge difference; they gain confidence, self esteem, they have somebody they can talk to that they may not have had before. Statistics show 'Littles' who have a big brother or big sister are less likely to be bullied in school or become a bully themselves, and they are more likely to graduate high school."
