They're breaking new ground on renovating the old Harvey Woods Building.
Last week, Sierra Construction took the roof off the middle of the former factory building.
That will make way for construction of a glass atrium that will be a common area once 54 affordable housing units are built.
Project Spokesperson Michael Harding says it's created a dramatic change to the building. "We're returning this building back to the 1920's when it had an alleyway in here. So if you can picture it with the roof off and light just spilling down to the main floor and totally changing the way this building looks, and keeping the historical accuracy of it. I think when the public sees what we're doing here are going to be very, very pleased."
But that won't be for sometime.
The plan is to have the first 54 apartment units ready for October 1st of 2014.
Last week, a building permit was obtained to allow for the annex building on the back of the property to be demolished. That demolition work will start this week. Construction crews will then install a new roof and windows to seal the building before winter hits.
Homestead's Project Director Graham Cubitt says time is of the essence. "With winter coming, getting the roof on, the windows in, a lot of mechanical, structural and electrical work...it's a really big start on the project. We're just finishing the designs and everything for the final details, but this gives us a chance to get work underway before winter sets in."
