Roughly 100 students from College Ave Secondary School walked to Erine Hardeman's office to protest the cuts to OSAP grant funding.
WOODSTOCK - It was a wet, but peaceful protest in the Friendly City.
A group of roughly 100 students from College Ave Secondary School marched to Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman's office to voice their displeasure about the cuts to OSAP grant funding. Organizer Grade 12 student Maera Sloane explains why a protest like this is so important.
"We had grants, and they were 85% of OSAP. He has now dropped down to 25% maximum, which is not right, because there are a lot of working-class people in Ontario that need help going to post-secondary, and we aren't getting that help anymore because our government is not giving us the help we need."
Sloane says that cuts this drastic will cause more debt to students, and will just make things harder. She adds that the protest is just a way to make sure voices are heard.
"The easiest way I can explain it is that it's something that most people need, and it's something that we need to fight for. And going out like this and using your voice and fighting for what you think is right is your legal right as an Ontario citizen."
Sloane adds that people should use their right to protest more often because, at the end of the day, no one else will speak up for you.
