Oxford County would like to receive $105,000 from the province to help fund emergency management for legacy oil and gas wells.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is hoping to receive provincial funding to help cover the cost of emergency management for legacy oil and gas wells.
Warden Marcus Ryan says these might not be the oil and gas wells that extract natural resources.
"These are wells that people have historically stored oil and gas in to use for heating purposes."
He adds a lot of these wells were put in throughout the province before regulations were in place.
"But then of course because they weren't regulated, not everybody knows where they are. Time goes by, people forget where they are and then someone goes to dig a whole one day for a foundation or something and they find one of these tanks. Usually when they find them it's just an unpleasant surprise, but since oil and gas were stored in them, there is always the potential for an accident."
The county is hoping to receive $105,000 from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, which would help pay for public education materials and resources for emergency reception centres.
