Everything you need to know about special events and attractions in Oxford County will soon just be a click away. Oxford County Tourism is set to launch a new interactive map on their website that will make it easier for potential visitors or even those living in the county find information on trails, bird watching, special events and many more all at one central location. Geographic Information System Analyst for the County, Melanie Forsbrey says often times printed maps created for the county were not easily accessed to those outside of the County and usually only dealt with one specific topic or festival. "We were constantly making a bunch of maps, printed maps, and I've seen a couple interactive maps out west that kind of brought some of those different themes together, so we thought that with some of our GIS, which is our mapping software, there was good possibility to create an innovated and cutting edge tourism mapping application." Tourism Specialist for the County of Oxford, Cathy Bingham says they were looking into ways to feature activities that aren't regularly on maps. "For example birding and you don't go to a map and see birding on a map so birding was one of the things we wanted to be able to identify to people and be able to give information on where it is and what it is and when to come and all that sort of thing. We thought the same for trails and that's sort of how the beginning of our discussions came to develop this interactive site." The new website will officially launch to the public in May and will feature trail information, Cycling and motorcycle routes, as well as recreation areas and other attractions. Tourism Oxford says they are also working on a smart phone app that should be ready by the fall.
