Local MP Dave MacKenzie weighs in on the sudden news of the former Federal Finance Minister's death
Jim Flaherty has died suddenly -- one month after resigning from his post as Federal Finance Minster. Police and paramedics were called Thursday to his downtown Ottawa condominium where the former minister was discovered with no vital signs.
Speaking from Ottawa, Oxford Conservative M-P Dave MacKenzie said members of all parties are mourning the loss of Flaherty this afternoon.
"I think everybody knew that the Minister was sick, we didn't know how sick. He just didn't seem to have the same Jim Flaherty bounce as he had in the past but not knowing what his illnesses were, he kept doing the job."
MacKenzie says he was standing in the member's lobby in Ottawa when he heard the news.
"The word of those things always goes around quickly, you know, the sad news travels quick and so it just went through the lobby quickly."
Upon hearing the news, The House of Commons immediately suspended business.
Nasdaq also commemorated Flaherty in New York this afternoon honouring him with a condolence image today in Times Square for his contribution to the global economy.
An official cause of death has not yet been reported. Flaherty served as Federal finance minister from 2006 until March of this year. He was 64.
