The Oxford County Public Health Unit Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is inviting the public to join the Milky Way.
October 1-7th has been deemed World Breastfeeding Week and to celebrate 2 showings of a documentary will be held in Oxford County. Public Health Nurse who is also a Lactation Consultant for Oxford County, Janice McGill, explains the importance of breastfeeding for new parents. "We have World Breastfeeding Week to celebrate breastfeeding. The formula business has done a lot to undermine women's natural instincts and abilities in breastfeeding. We have World Breastfeeding Week to try and change the tide on that."
For over 20 years those in Oxford County have acknowledged World Breastfeeding Week, and McGill explains how they are prepared to provide new parents with the benefits of breastfeeding. "We are having two showings of the documentary The Milky Way in Oxford, we are giving away some door prizes for people who attend that. We have the La Leche's book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, and a breastfeeding pillow to give away."
McGill goes over another reason on why many women choose not to breast feed. "Our culture has sexualized breasts to such and extent that women are made to feel uncomfortable if they breast feed their babies in public. We want to put some focus back on the maternal function of breasts, and we are hoping that women will feel more comfortable to breast feed anywhere." The Milky Way will been shown at the Tillsonburg Library and the Woodstock Health Unit on October 20th and 8th.
