A new Employment Insurance special benefit will ease the financial pressure on parents who take time off work to care for their critically ill or injured children. It's is part of the Government of Canada's continued action to help people balance work and family responsibilities. "I think the first thing it does is offer some comfort and ability for parents to understand that they will have support if they have a need because of critically ill children. If they can't go to work, there is some financial assistance available through the EI fund," said Oxford MP Dave MacKenzie. Parents who must take time off work to care for a child who has a life-threatening illness or injury will be able to apply for up to 35 weeks of this new benefit. It's expected to be available in June 2013 and will help an estimated 6,000 families per year.
