Police are reminding the public on how to properly use the 9-1-1 system after receiving a prank call.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk County OPP wants to remind the public on the importance of using the 9-1-1 system.
Police received a 9-1-1 emergency call on February 21st at approximately 3:44pm from a 10-year-old girl in Simcoe.
The girl told the dispatcher she was looking for police assistance and gave them her address. However when officers arrived, they found out the girl didn't live there.
The homeowners spoke to police, providing them with the 10 year old's school address, and they also told the officers she was going to prank call others after school, but they didn't realize she'd call 9-1-1.
Officers attended the school and they were given her actual address. When they arrived, she was not in need of emergency assistance.
The OPP is reminding everyone about the proper use of 9-1-1. The use of 9-1-1 is for police, fire or medical emergencies when someone's health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress. If you have a non-emergency, dial 1-888-310-1122.
Accidentally calling 9-1-1 ties up emergency lines, communicators and officers which could slow down the response time to a real emergency, risking the safety of people who may be in need of urgent help.
