The owners of a home on Hunter Street have been charged for not providing working smoke detectors.
WOODSTOCK - The Owners of a home on Hunter Street have been charged under the Ontario Fire Code after a near fatal blaze last month.
One man was seriously injured during the fire on November 23rd at 258 Hunter Street. Firefighters found the unconscious man inside the home and were able to revive him at the scene and the man was rushed to the hospital.
After investigating officials revealed two fire code violations. One of them was not having a smoke alarm on the first floor of the house and the other violation was because the smoke alarm on the second floor was not maintained and operating.
Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Slager says this is a tragic reminder of why smoke detectors are so crucial.
“This near tragedy is a reminder of the importance of having working smoke alarms and an emergency escape plan in place to ensure everyone knows how to get out of a burning building safely. We want to prevent another tragedy in our community during this Christmas and end of the year season therefore I encourage everyone to test your smoke alarms today and ensure they are working!”
The owners of the home on Hunter Street could face a fine of up to $50,000 for not providing working smoke alarms.
