A dead bird that was found in Ingersoll tested positive for West Nile virus.
INGERSOLL - Another case of West Nile virus has been reported in Oxford County.
Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) says a dead bird in Ingersoll has tested positive for the virus. It was collected through the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative surveillance program. The positive test results were immediately reported to Public Health Ontario, which then notified the local health unit.
A mosquito trap in Woodstock also tested positive for West Nile a couple of weeks ago.
Most people who contract West Nile don't get sick, but those who do experience mild flu-like symptoms. Less than one percent of people with West Nile get seriously ill.
SWPH says it's important to wear bug spray with DEET to protect yourself. You should also wear light-coloured clothing with long pants, sleeves, and socks whenever mosquitos are around.
It also recommends removing areas with standing water around your property to reduce mosquito breeding environments. The water in your birth bath should be replaced once a day, you should have a screen covering your rain barrel, and make sure the pump is circulating if you have a pool.
